Lens Design

Brandywine’s specialty is the design and fabrication of hyperspectral imaging sensors, and their associated fore-optics. Merging state-of-the-art software tools with our application-specific library of lens prescriptions, Brandywine formulates an integrated solution tuned toward solving your problem from fore-optics (telescope, lens or fiber array), to order-blocking filter and camera. We use the industry standard Zemax program for lens design optimization, and FRED for our illumination and stray light analysis.

Optical system engineering

Most end-users are not interested in MTF, stray light analysis, or distortion, rather want to know: “Will this work according to these system metrics, with this algorithm?” To answer this question Brandywine is developing a new tool called the Scene-based Sensor ModelTM. The two key attributes of the SBSM is that for a set of truth scenes, you will not be able to tell if the data is coming from the as-built sensor, or the simulation. Targets and backgrounds move and change, with noise and intensity variations, just as in a real scene. The second attribute is that the model is written in commercially available software, thus is easily updated or changed.  With this information, the customer can:
  • Simulate as-built performance for algorithm development
  • Make informed decisions about system trades
  • Test calibration procedures
  • Fine tune Concept-of-Operations prior to deployment
  • More rapidly debug system artifacts
  • Show the end-customer how the system performs (detection vs. false alarms, or sensitivity)
We program in Matlab (sensor characterization), ENVI/IDL (hyperspectral image processing), or FRED/Visual Basic (optical simulations), depending on the application.

Other services include on-site installation, aircraft installations, and other associated field support.
